Welcome to Digital Audio Fortune version 2.0 1/22/94
Digital Audio Fortune 2.0 is a fortune cookie program with a
twist. Unlike most fortune cookie programs that print cute
messages or a quote, Digital Audio Fortune 2.0 plays a
randomly selected digital audio file from a user's defined
list.
This README file contains important, last minute information.
If you have a printer, please print out and read the
documentation file DAFORT.DOC.
This program has been tested on the following:
- a 33MH 486 running DOS 6.0 with a Sound Blaster 16.
- a 25MH 386DX running MSDOS 3.3 with an AdLib.
- a 16MH 386SX running MSDOS 3.3 and PCDOS 2.1 with a
Sound Blaster 1.5 and a Disney Sound Source
We suggest you load this program to your hard disk. Digital
Audio files can get very large, and loading them (and this
program) to your hard disk will improve performance. Floppy
disks do not have the throughput to sustain the 11,000 bytes
per second transfer rates required.
This version adds support for Sun/Next's .AU format files.
Support was also added for TAG SOFTWARE's compressed sound
file format (.DAS).
This version fixes a bug in the Sound Blaster auto-detection.
The routine that determined what IRQ the Sound Blaster used
could be fooled by a communication program or mouse on COMM2
(IRQ 3).
This version supports digital sounds on the AdLib. While the
AdLib does not directly support digital sounds (like the Sound
Blaster), creditable reproduction of digital sounds can be
accomplished using a modulated FM voice.
This version supports digital sounds on the Disney Sound
Source. While the Sound Source is only rated to play sampling
rates up to 7000 Hz, this program will drive it up to 44100 Hz.
Both the AdLib and Sound Source support use the system tick
timer to provide the precise timing required for these
devices. Disk access distorts the sound. We will work on the
problem.
Bob Chrisp has reported that DAFORT can be used to provide
random external digital alarms for TELEMATE 4.0 (an excellent
Shareware communications package from White River Software).
For more information on how to use DAFORT with TELEMATE, see
the file DAFALARM.DOC
We are extremely interested in your constructive comments
and suggestions. Feedback from users, even negative
feedback, helps us to improve our products. We thank
you for your interest in TAG SOFTWARE products.

INSTALLATION
EXECUTING DAFORT FROM FLOPPY DISK:
DAFORT should be executable directly from the floppy disk.
However, we suggest that you make a backup copy using your
favorite disk duplication program. We strongly suggest that
you install DAFORT on your hard disk. Performance of DAFORT
is affected by floppy drive throughput.
1) Insert the floppy disk containing DAFORT into a floppy
disk drive. If this drive is the "B" drive then use "B:"
instead of "A:" in the remaining steps.
2) For systems with a Sound Blaster or AdLib, at the DOS
prompt type:
A:
DAFORT DAFORT.RC
For systems with a Disney Sound Source, at the DOS prompt
type:
A:
DAFORT -D DAFORT.RC
3) The program should print:
Digital Audio Fortune version 2.0
COPYRIGHT (c) 1993 by Allen & Carole Grider
Shareware version - Continued use requires registration
Selected: <filename>
You should hear the file being played on your Sound
Blaster, AdLib, or Disney Sound Source.
Note that we have included 4 very good sound files and set up
an example selection file (DAFORT.RC). You will want to
modify DAFORT.RC to include any digital sound files you may
have. If you don't have any, see our catalog (CATALOG.DOC).
We have a large selection that we can supply at a nominal
price. In addition, when you register DAFORT, you get one
FREE disk from our Digital Audio Series Collection as part of
your registration bonus.
INSTALLING DAFORT TO HARD DISK:
If you have received your copy of DAFORT 2.0 from a disk
or rack vendor, they may have included an installation
program. If so, then follow the directions supplied therein.
Otherwise, follow these directions.
1) Insert the floppy disk containing DAFORT into the
floppy disk drive. If this drive is the "B" drive, use
"B:" instead of "A:" in the remaining steps.
2) You should create a directory on your hard disk. We
suggest DAFORT as its name. It can be on any of your
DOS disks. These procedures assume that you will install
DAFORT on your C: disk. If you wish to install it on
another of your disks, substitute that disk for C: in the
rest of these steps. Type the following to create the
directory.
C:
CD \
MKDIR DAFORT
CD DAFORT
3) Copy the contents of the floppy disk into the directory
you just created on your hard disk.
COPY A:*.*
4) Digital Audio Fortune 2.0 is now installed on your hard
disk. To complete the installation, print out the DAFORT.DOC
and REGISTER.DOC files.
5) For systems with a Sound Blaster or AdLib, at the DOS
prompt type:
DAFORT DAFORT.RC
For systems with a Disney Sound Source, at the DOS prompt
type:
DAFORT -D DAFORT.RC
6) The program should print:

QUICK INSTALLATION
1) Copy all the files from the floppy to a directory on your

files. Remember that this program is shareware. If you continue
to use it, you are required to register it.
2) Change to the directory that you copied DAFORT to in
the step above. Then type:
DAFORT DAFORT.RC
or for a Disney Sound Source
DAFORT -D DAFORT.RC
3) The program should print:
